Signs Your Ceramic Coating Isn’t Working (And What to Do About It)

Your car used to bead water like crazy, but now… nothing. Did your ceramic spray fail? Is it gone? Before you strip everything and start over, here’s how to check if your coating is really dead—and what to do to bring it back fast.

1. Water Beading Has Stopped

If your coating used to bead water and now it doesn’t, that’s a red flag—but it doesn’t always mean failure. Coatings like Tough As Shell and Gloss Boss can become clogged by road film, soap scum, or hard water minerals. The performance is masked, not gone.

How to Fix It:

Do a decon wash using The Super Soaper. This helps strip away oils and grime that block the coating. Rinse well and retest for beading.

2. Paint Looks Flat or Cloudy

If the gloss is fading or the finish looks dull, it may just need a quick polish—not a full removal. Over time, fallout and contaminants build up and reduce clarity. The coating underneath might still be intact.

How to Fix It:

Clay the surface, then use a light polish like Picture Perfect Polish. This revives gloss without removing the ceramic layer.

3. Water Is Sheeting or Sticking

Beading isn’t the only way to tell a coating is working. Sheeting water is often a sign the slick top layer is dirty—not that the base coating has failed. But if water is pooling, it’s time to act.

How to Fix It:

Wash thoroughly, clay bar if needed, then apply a spray topper like Gloss Boss to refresh slickness and hydrophobics.

4. Dirt Sticks More Than Usual

Ceramic coatings reduce dirt buildup. If grime suddenly sticks easier or washing gets harder, that’s another signal your coating needs help—not necessarily removal.

How to Fix It:

Reset the surface with a strip wash and use a ceramic topper to bring back the dirt-repelling performance. If no change, consider reapplying your coating.

When You Actually Need to Reapply

If the surface has no beading, gloss is gone, and nothing restores performance after washing, claying, and polishing—your coating may be worn out. But good news: you don’t have to start from scratch.

Just wash, decontaminate, and reapply Tough As Shell or Gloss Boss. They bond right over the previous layer if the surface is clean.
