How to Use a Cut & Finish Pad Like a Pro (Step-by-Step Guide)
A cut & finish pad saves you time and effort—but only if your technique is dialed in. Here’s how to get pro-level results on any car using the right machine, polish, and pressure.
What You’ll Need
- Cut & Finish Pad
- Picture Perfect Polish
- DA or rotary polisher (works with both)
- Panel prep spray or IPA wipe
- Soft microfiber towels
Step 1: Prep the Surface
Make sure the paint is clean, decontaminated, and dry. If necessary, clay the vehicle before polishing. Use a panel wipe or IPA to remove any waxes, sealants, or fillers that could interfere with pad performance.
Step 2: Prime the Pad
Apply 4–5 small dots of Picture Perfect Polish to the pad. Lightly spread the product on the panel using the machine turned off before engaging the trigger.
Step 3: Choose Your Speed and Pressure
- DA Polisher: Speed 4–5. Use light to moderate pressure and slow, overlapping passes.
- Rotary Polisher: ~1000–1400 RPM. Let the polish do the work. Apply minimal downward force to finish clean.
Step 4: Work the Polish
Use a crosshatch pattern (up/down, then left/right) over a 2’ x 2’ section. Perform 3–5 slow passes, then wipe down with a soft microfiber towel to inspect your work.
Step 5: Clean the Pad as You Go
After every panel or two, clean the pad using compressed air, a pad brush, or rinse and spin it dry. A clean pad = consistent performance and finish quality.
Step 6: Repeat As Needed
Continue section by section. If you need slightly more cut, increase pad pressure or bump machine speed slightly. If you want a softer finish, reduce polish amount or work the product longer at lower speed.
Pro Tip
Use The Super Soaper as your prep wash to ensure you’re polishing on a clean, coating-safe surface with no wax or silicone interference.
When You’re Done
Lock in your work with a long-lasting spray like Tough As Shell. One layer is all you need to seal your one-step polish for months of gloss and protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this pad with any polish?
Yes—but for best results, use a polish designed to cut and finish like Picture Perfect Polish.
Do I need to use a finishing pad after?
No—this pad is made to finish clean when used correctly. On most paints, there’s no need for a second pad or polish step.
What if the pad clogs or dusts?
Use less product and clean the pad more often. Also avoid overworking the polish—3 to 4 passes is usually enough.
Can I use it on ceramic coated cars?
No—polishing coated paint may reduce or remove protection. Only polish if you're prepping for reapplication.
