How to Prep a Car for Maximum Ceramic Spray Bonding
If you want your ceramic spray to last and perform its best, surface prep is KEY. Here’s exactly how to prep your car for maximum bonding and protection.
Why Surface Prep Matters So Much
Applying ceramic spray to a poorly prepped car is a recipe for failure:
- It won’t bond well → protection won’t last.
- It may streak or haze.
- Gloss and slickness will be compromised.
The better you prep the paint, the better your ceramic spray will perform and the longer it will last.
Here’s the Full Prep Process I Recommend:
Step 1 → Wash Thoroughly with The Super Soaper
You need to start with a perfectly clean surface.
The Super Soaper is my go-to because it:
- Cuts through old wax, sealants, and grime.
- Rinses clean with no residue that could block ceramic bonding.
- Foams extremely well → perfect for touchless pre-soak and contact wash.
Pro Tip → Do a foam pre-soak first → rinse → then contact wash with an Orange Wash Microfiber Towel.
Step 2 → Decontaminate the Paint
After washing, you need to remove any bonded contaminants (things the wash can’t touch):
- Clay the paint using a clay mitt or traditional clay bar.
- Use a dedicated clay lube or even The Super Soaper at a higher dilution as lube.
This step is crucial → if you skip this, your ceramic spray will try to bond to contamination instead of clean paint.
Step 3 → Dry Properly
Use a Massive Drying Towel to dry the car thoroughly → you don’t want water trapped under your ceramic spray.
Step 4 → Final Panel Wipe (Optional but Recommended)
If your paint was heavily contaminated or previously waxed, do a quick panel wipe with an alcohol-based prep spray to ensure no oils or residues remain.
This ensures your ceramic spray bonds directly to bare paint.
Step 5 → Apply Tough As Shell for Maximum Results
Now that your surface is perfectly prepped → it’s time to apply Tough As Shell.
- Spray 1–2 sprays per panel.
- Spread with a Softer Than Soft Microfiber Towel.
- Buff dry immediately with the clean side of the towel.
For max gloss and slickness, consider layering with The Gloss Boss after 24 hours.
