How to Prep Your Car for a Ceramic Spray Coating
Ceramic sprays only work if your paint is properly prepped. Here’s what most people skip—and why it matters.
Why Prep Matters for Ceramic Sprays
You could use the best ceramic spray in the world, but if the surface isn’t clean, dry, and decontaminated—it won’t bond. That means it won’t last, won’t bead water, and won’t protect your paint.
Proper prep ensures your spray coating:
- Bonds directly to the paint or clear coat
- Lasts longer and performs better
- Applies evenly without streaking or smearing
Step 1 – Pre-Rinse and Foam
Start by rinsing the car to remove loose dirt. Then use a pre-soak like The Super Soaper to foam the entire surface and let it dwell for a few minutes.
This breaks down road grime and loosens contamination without scrubbing.
Step 2 – Contact Wash with a High-Lubricity Soap
Use a soft, paint-safe towel like the Orange Wash Microfiber Towel and wash the car top to bottom using a gentle, slick soap. Rinse thoroughly.
Step 3 – Clay the Paint
If you feel any roughness after washing, use a clay bar or mitt to remove embedded contaminants. This gives your ceramic spray a clean surface to bond to—and improves gloss and slickness.
Step 4 – Dry with a Proper Towel
Do not let water air-dry. Use a Massive Drying Towel to soak up water without scratching. This is especially important before ceramic spray application to avoid water spots and dilution.
Step 5 – Optional: Polish if Needed
If your paint is oxidized or has swirls, consider using Picture Perfect Polish to prep the surface. It improves bonding and leaves the paint looking flawless before you seal it in.
