Clay Bar Step-by-Step Guide: How to Decontaminate Your Paint Safely
Claying your car is one of the most effective ways to remove embedded contaminants and prep your paint for protection. If you’ve never done it before, don’t worry — this step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to know.
With the right tools and techniques, you can safely clay your vehicle at home without scratching or damaging your paint. Let’s get into it.
What You’ll Need
- Clay media: Clay mitt or traditional clay bar
- Lubricant: The Super Soaper diluted in a pump foamer or spray bottle
- Microfiber towel: Everyday Microfiber Towel
- Protection product: Tough As Shell
Step 1: Wash the Vehicle First
Before claying, always perform a thorough contact wash. Use a high-quality soap like The Super Soaper in a foam cannon or bucket to remove as much loose dirt and debris as possible.
Step 2: Dilute Your Clay Lube
Use The Super Soaper diluted to the proper ratio for claying:
- Spray bottle: 1 oz per 16 oz water
- Pump foamer: 2–3 oz per 40 oz water
This creates the slick surface you need to glide the clay safely.
Step 3: Work in Small Sections
Start on the upper panels and work your way down. Spray your clay lubricant generously onto a 2x2 ft area, then glide your clay mitt or bar in straight lines (no circles).
Apply light pressure only. You should feel the surface smooth out as the contaminants are removed. Stop once it feels slick and glides effortlessly.
Step 4: Wipe with a Clean Microfiber
After each section, wipe down the panel with a clean Everyday Microfiber Towel to remove any leftover lube or residue.
Step 5: Inspect and Repeat
Use the baggie test to check your work. Place your hand inside a sandwich bag and gently run it across the surface. If it still feels gritty, reapply lube and repeat until smooth.
Step 6: Seal the Paint Immediately
Now that your paint is clean and decontaminated, apply a protection product to lock it in. We recommend Tough As Shell ceramic spray for long-lasting hydrophobic protection.
