Polishing Mistakes to Avoid
How to Prevent Swirls, Haze, and Frustration
Polishing your car is one of the most rewarding detailing tasks—but it’s also where beginners make some of the biggest mistakes. If you want to get professional results without damaging your paint or wasting time, this list of common polishing errors is essential reading.
1. Skipping the Wash and Decon Step
Polishing over dirty or contaminated paint will grind that debris into the surface, potentially causing more damage than you remove.
The fix: Always wash thoroughly with a pH-neutral soap like The Super Soaper and use a clay bar if the paint feels rough.
2. Using the Wrong Pad or Product
Too aggressive, and you risk micro-marring or haze. Too mild, and nothing happens. A mismatch between pad, polish, and paint can waste hours.
The fix: Use a one-step polish like Picture Perfect Polish with a foam polishing pad to start. Adjust from there as needed.
3. Working in Direct Sunlight
Heat causes polish to dry too quickly, making wipe-off harder and reducing effectiveness. Worse, it can create streaks and smears.
The fix: Work in the shade or in a garage. If that’s not possible, do smaller sections and buff quickly.
4. Using Too Much Product
More isn’t better. Overloading the pad leads to slinging, gumming, and uneven results.
The fix: Use 4-5 small dots of polish on a clean pad and reapply as needed—not every pass.
5. Not Cleaning or Swapping Pads
A saturated pad stops cutting and starts smearing. It can also overheat your paint and reduce clarity.
The fix: Clean pads with compressed air or a brush after every section. Have extras ready so you can swap when needed.
6. Moving Too Fast or Applying Too Much Pressure
Polishing too quickly or pushing down too hard reduces correction and can actually introduce haze or micro-scratches.
The fix: Let the pad and polish do the work. Use slow, overlapping passes with light to moderate pressure.
7. Forgetting to Protect After Polishing
Polishing removes paint defects—but it also removes any protection. If you leave the surface bare, it’s vulnerable to damage.
The fix: Apply a durable sealant or ceramic spray like Tough As Shell immediately after polishing.
