Etched Glass from Sprinklers or Ocean Air? Here’s What to Do
If your windshield looks like it’s permanently stained from hard water or salt, don’t give up. Most etched glass can be restored—without replacing it.
Why Sprinklers and Ocean Air Wreck Glass
When sprinkler water lands on your windshield, it dries and leaves behind calcium, magnesium, and other minerals. Over time, these minerals embed into the pores of the glass—especially if you live in a hot or dry climate where water evaporates fast.
Ocean air causes similar problems. Salt particles in the air combine with moisture and cling to your glass. The salt crystals can pit and stain the glass over time, especially if left unwashed for weeks.
What Etching Looks Like
You’ll know your glass is etched if:
- It looks hazy or cloudy, even after washing
- There’s a white or gray “ghost” pattern where water dried
- The surface feels rough when you run your hand over it
The 2-Step Process to Fix Etched Glass
Step 1: Use Pure Magic Cleaner
Pure Magic Cleaner is an acid-based cleaner that dissolves the mineral deposits causing the etching. Spray it onto the glass, let dwell for 30–60 seconds, agitate gently, then rinse.
Step 2: Polish with Picture Perfect Polish
After cleaning, polish the glass using Picture Perfect Polish and a foam pad like the Finishing Pad or Cut & Finish Pad. This removes remaining haze, smooths the surface, and restores optical clarity.
Pro Tips
- Always work in shade and on a cool surface
- Never let Pure Magic Cleaner dry on the glass
- Use overlapping passes when polishing for even clarity
- Finish with a ceramic spray for water repellency
